Portland is home to a vibrant, innovative and creative Hispanic/Latinx Community.

Our Hispanic and Latinx small businesses serve up a hell of a lot more than tacos. From high-end leather goods and award-winning fashion to original theater productions and fine dining, Portland’s Hispanic/Latinx community delivers culture and inspiration throughout this great city. And yes, we’ve got some pretty rad taco joints too.

Let this list be just the start of exploring Portland’s Hispanic/Latinx community.

arium

Plants! Plants! Plants!
In Latin Arium means "a space or vessel that contains something".

Arium is a jungle for the community and plant lovers to feel at home free of judgment. Owners, Tylor Rogers and Anthony Sanchez, focus on supporting local and national makers of pottery and other made items to cultivate the creative flow of Community. The shop features a wide array of beginner-friendly to exotic plants, as well as all your plant up-keep supplies.

Treat yourself and peruse the beauty of Arium.

Nico’s cantina

From the food, to the drinks, to the little salt shakers on the tables – Nico’s Cantina has all the elements of an authentic cantina experience.

The Cantina lives by “Hoy Se Goza”, which roughly translates to “Enjoy Today.”Nico’s Cantina is a space and environment where everyone that walks through the doors is invited to enjoy their day to the fullest.

There’s a plethora of salivating goods at the Cantina – supplement your tripe burrito with some chicharrón and an agua fresca to wash it all down.

If Nico’s sounds familiar, you may be thinking of Nico's Icecream and their other new joint Nico’s Coffee

We’re proud of Nico and the growth of his ever-expanding businesses!

Esperanza Trading Company

Matutina [mah-two-tee-nah]- An adjective that applies to the hours of the morning, or to things that occur in the morning.

At Esperanza Trading Company it simply means "come get this bread".

Have you ever just sat around and drank coffee with the window open and the bossanova playing in the background on a rainy day? At Esperanza you can enjoy a charming space that serves food, homemade Mexican pastries, and pour-over coffees that emulate authenticity with every sip.

mis tacones

Mis Tacones is an expert in classic taqueria meals with a veganized twist!

When Mis Tacones launched as a vegan pop-up in 2016, owner Polo Bañuelos cooked their scratch-made seitan asada and hand-pressed tortillas while wearing stiletto heels – a fitting choice as Mis Tacones translates to both “my tacos” and “my heels” in Spanish.

Now in their new permanent location on NE Killingsworth St., Mis Tacones has become a space for queer and BIPOC communities. Mis Tacones happily provides free meals to any trans person of color upon request. “We give a lot of food away; I won’t hesitate to feed anybody at all,” says Bañuelos. “We put an emphasis on POC trans folks because I want them to know that they’re seen and heard and loved and cared about. We got you.”

pah!

Pah! is a queer, Latinx, and deaf-owned eatery serving up beef and vegan burgers, blooming onions, and fish and chips with a side of ASL slang.

The restaurant’s name, Pah!, is ASL slang for “success” or “finally”. Each dish on the menu gets its own ASL name, too. 258, the name for the blooming onion, means “very interesting”, That-That, the name for the salad, means “That’s exactly what I’m talking about!,” and Pei Pei, the name of the bacon cheeseburger, means “cocky.”

Keeping it within the community, Pah! uses plant-based cheese from one our favorite queer and Latinx-owned vegan taquerias @mistacones.

There are no other restaurants like Pah! in Portland (and barely any nationwide). Stop by and let your senses enjoy a new experience.

PALOMAR

If you’ve been to Palomar on SE Division you’ve been taken by the beautiful space and mean drinks.  Palomar is much more than a daiquiri bar; it’s a testament to owner Ricky Gomez’s Cuban heritage, his years at some lauded cocktail bars, and the cultural legacy of Cuban bars.

While the Caribbean cocktails are certainly the highlight of Gomez’s Miami art deco space, Palomar’s fresh take on Cuban classics, like the vegan-friendly chickpea “chorizo” empanadas, demand recognition.

With knowledgeable bartenders and exceptional service, Palomar offers a memorable dining experience in addition to expertly crafted drinks.

Make a date for Palomar and bring the sunshine into your world!

Orox Leather

Thinking a lot about value and values these days. What do we value as individuals, as a community, and as a society overall? What are the values we hold true and live by? Family, freedom, creativity, quality, longevity, and the environment could all land high on the list.

There’s a four generation, Latinx owned and operated small business in Old Town that put those particular set of values into each item they produce, which only adds to the value of owning a meticulously crafted piece by Orox Leather Co.

We did another little happy dance when Orox Leather opened their 2nd shop in downtown Portland! Their handcrafted leather goods are made right here in Portland and include elegant handbags, rugged commuter bags, and other personal essential accessories including wallets, belts and hats.

Ale O Moda

Designer Alejandra Oyervides creates elegant, modern and sophisticated designs that are equally simple and stunning. It’s no surprise that she was voted best emerging designer two years in a row by Portland Fashion and Style Awards.

Los Puñales

One of the things that Portland is known for is its openness and that's particularly true of our small businesses whose ethos embrace and celebrate the lives of their customers, employees, and the founders themselves.

Taqueria Los Puñales is proudly queer and welcomes its employees and guests to be themselves.

This taco haven has much to choose from, like their pork in chile verde, tinga, mole poblano with chicken, bistec con papas in a guajillo-tomato sauce, a variety of agua frescas and much more. Their wall of Queer art is spectacular and not to be missed. And yes, tacos rule!

wildehaus

Fresh inside Origin Story on North Williams Ave., Wildehaus is a Hispanic and woman owned business that strives to help you elevate your everyday spaces. This duo loves sharing their plant based knowledge, and offers Interior Greening consultation services: they’ll come to your space for an evaluation, create a successful greening plan for you, and set a date to come back to install the greening feature of your dreams!

Wildehaus’s lush array of happy plants, the design knowledge they share plus, what may be some of the best price points in the city, is what keeps customers coming back. Connecting with beginner plant collectors in their community means they get to hear all the positive impacts being felt by caring for plants - and that is what inspires everything Wildehaus does.
